Tom Sawyer’s River Today
About the exhibit:
There are three themes in this exhibit. Hopefully there will soon be some examples of each theme on the club website. The themes are:
People and events on the river
Towns and places on the river
River “landscapes” and wildlife
About the artists:
The exhibit committee would like to encourage each club member to submit at least one picture for consideration. The maximum number from one photographer is 6. There will be an attempt to use at least one picture from each photographer who submits pictures as long as sufficient display space is available. The pictures may be all in the same theme, or divided among the three themes.
About the pictures:
The deadline for turning in prints (not yet matted and framed) is mid-August. The exact date will be announced later. The exhibit committee has envisioned a possible social get-together for this date.
Submitted prints should be at least 8x10 but may be larger (the final matted and framed print should be at least 11x14 but no larger than 16x20).
The picture does not have to be one taken recently; images taken at any time are welcome.
Creative prints are welcomed and even encouraged; collages, blending of images, pictures with insets, and editing to remove distracting elements are all welcomed, along with whatever the photographer’s imagination can come up with.
In order to keep the exhibit uniform, the prints will be matted in white or shades of white, from stark white to eggshell to ivory to very pale gray, etc. At the time the prints are submitted, the committee will have samples of the mat shades available to help the photographer make a selection that best suits his print.
Since the purpose of the exhibit is related to education, each print should be accompanied by a short description of the relationship of the image to the exhibit. Some hypothetical examples are:
[picture of flooded river] High water on the river at Helena, Spring 2008
[picture of historic building in river town] The [name] building, built in 1834, was the center of the cotton trade in pre-civil war days.
[fellow in a canoe] Contestant in the annual Mississippi River Canoe and Kayak Race, May, 2008
Matting and Framing
Once the prints to be included in the exhibit have been chosen, there will be at least a 30-day period for the photographer to get the matting and framing done. The committee will post more specific guidelines about mats and frames closer to the time, along with lists of several places to either purchase mat and frame materials or to have matting and framing done.
